HISTORY

Up

Niguliste Street

Niguliste Street in Tallinn got its name from Niguliste church (Die Nikolaikirche). The church was first mentioned in 1316. But the church was probably built already in the 1230s when German merchants came from Ojamaa to Tallinn, invited by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, and established a German trade hall and a small town here.

The road leading to Niguliste church was started to be called „the road where you got to Saint Nicolas “ (… velud itur ad sanctum Nicolaum) in 1367. In 1723 with the Estonian name Nikkola ulits and from 1732, Niggola uulits. This became Nigulaste uulits in 1861, and later Niguliste Street (tänav).

In 1948–1987, Niguliste street together with Kuninga Street was called Kuninga Street.

Dunkri Street

Dunkri Street starts from the Townhall Square and leads to the west, ending up on Rataskaevu Street. The street is about 130 m long. Dunkri Street was established in the 11th century and it was a part of the trade road coming from the south, that is, Pärnu highway. In the past, Dunkri Street has been called Vana Tooma Street.
